Assessing the
quality of an image.
Because of the subjective nature of assessing artistic creativity there really can be no
definitive set of rules or even guidelines.
The following list has
been suggested by Brian Cudby FPSNZ,
AFAIP, ESFIAP
Impact.
(The WOW Factor)
Harmony - balance.
(composition)
Sends a message / idea
(projects thoughts, visually)
Technical competency
(including presentation)
Evoke emotion / mood / feeling
(where is the photographer?)
Simplicity
(a coherent image with a
centre of interest)
Effective lighting
(the essence of photography)
Creativity / innovation
(artistic / the usual shown
in an unusual way)
Further thoughts are suggested by Sally Mason FPSNZ
Aspects I feel should be considered side by side when evaluating an
image are.......... in no particular order...
Impact
when the WOW factor communicates very strongly
Composition
in any image, including those where creative play or
computer manipulation
has been involved,
the basic composition will always ring through, good or
bad.
Lighting
the
recognition of it and the effective use of it.
Originality acknowledgement should be give for fresh approaches.
So often in the Camera Club scene images become
predictable, seemingly taken to "satisfy the judge".
Creativity digital allows room to play to the photographers heart's content.
Freedom of expression should be welcomed and encouraged.
Technical ability where the use of the camera and the understanding of picture making
connect
all the above.
...... further to that, I don't believe there is a place for the word
"correct" in today’s photographic judging language.
